McCulloch County

History

For thousands of years, the Tonkawa, Comanche, and Apache tribes inhabited the area now known as McCulloch County. These tribes fiercely defended their territory, delaying permanent European settlement until the 1870s. Despite its sparse population, the Texas Legislature established McCulloch County in 1856, naming it after Benjamin McCulloch, a renowned Texas Ranger and Confederate general. During the Civil War, many settlers remained in the county to protect their homes from Native American raids rather than joining the Confederate forces. Agriculture became the backbone of the local economy, with cotton emerging as a major crop by the late 19th century. The arrival of the Fort Worth and Rio Grande Railway in 1903 facilitated the transportation of goods, further boosting the county's agricultural sector. The Great Depression of the 1930s brought significant challenges, forcing many farmers to diversify their crops and shift toward livestock production to survive. In 1941, during World War II, the county established Curtis Field, a pilot training facility that contributed to the war effort. After the war, the facility briefly served as a training school for delinquent Black girls before closing in 1946. In the post-war years, McCulloch County continued to focus on agriculture while gradually diversifying its economy to better serve its residents and adapt to modern needs.

McCulloch County offers a variety of recreational activities that attract both residents and visitors. One of its most famous events is the Annual World Championship BBQ Goat Cook-Off, held every Labor Day weekend in Brady. This lively competition draws people from all over Texas who come to enjoy great food, live music, and a family-friendly festival atmosphere. For outdoor enthusiasts, Brady Lake provides a peaceful retreat with opportunities for boating, fishing, and swimming. The county is also well-known for hunting, attracting sportsmen looking to harvest whitetail deer, turkey, and dove during the various hunting seasons.

McCulloch County has a small, yet stable economy rooted in agriculture and supported by key industries that serve its population. Livestock production remains at the heart of the county's agricultural sector, continuing a long-standing tradition of ranching and farming. Healthcare and social services are among the county's largest employers, with hospitals, clinics, and nursing facilities playing a crucial role in the local economy. Hospitality is also essential, as hotels, lodges, and other accommodations provide services for visitors and traveling workers. Additionally, the construction industry supports growth and development, creating jobs and improving infrastructure.
