Discover Kendall County
Your Perfect Blend of Nature and Community
Nestled in the heart of Texas Hill Country, Kendall County is a treasure trove of natural beauty, community spirit, and the perfect blend of rural charm and urban convenience. As someone deeply enamored with this picturesque locale, let me take you on a journey through the rolling hills, vibrant communities, and serene landscapes that make Kendall County truly special.
The county's landscape is a masterpiece painted by nature itself, with rolling hills stretching as far as the eye can see, carpeted with a kaleidoscope of wildflowers in the spring. Majestic oak trees dot the countryside, providing shade and a sense of timeless beauty. The Guadalupe River, with its gentle curves and tranquil waters, is the lifeline of the region, offering residents and visitors alike a peaceful retreat for fishing, kayaking, or simply basking in the serene beauty of the surroundings.
History
Archeological evidence indicates that the area now known as Kendall County has been inhabited for thousands of years, with the Apache, Comanche, and Kiowa tribes among its earliest residents. In 1847, Bavarian immigrant Nicolaus Zink established the first European settlement along the Guadalupe River, approximately 13 miles north of present-day Boerne. The county was officially created on January 10, 1862, and named in honor of George Wilkins Kendall, a journalist and Mexican American War correspondent. Boerne was designated as the county seat. Due to its significant German population, Kendall County largely opposed secession during the Civil War, with many residents remaining loyal to the Union. Following the war, the arrival of the railroad in the 1880s spurred economic recovery. The Great Depression led to business closures and stunted growth, but World War II and the development of neighboring Bexar County brought renewed prosperity. The construction of Interstate Highway 10 further enhanced transportation and connectivity. Today, Kendall County is part of the Greater San Antonio area and continues to experience growth and diversification.
Recreation
Kendall County offers a variety of recreational activities that highlight its natural beauty and cultural heritage. The Guadalupe River State Park features miles of hiking trails and four miles of pristine river frontage, ideal for swimming, canoeing, and fishing. Cascade Caverns provides guided tours of impressive limestone caves, offering a glimpse into the region's geological history. For those interested in local culture, the annual Boerne Oktoberfest celebrates the county's German roots with traditional food, live music, and various festivities.
Industry
Kendall County's economy is supported by several key industries. Manufacturing plays a significant role, with companies such as O.W. Lee Company providing numerous jobs and substantial revenue. The biosciences and healthcare sectors are vital, featuring multiple hospitals, clinics, and research centers that contribute significantly to employment. Tourism and hospitality also form a substantial part of the economy, thanks to attractions like Boerne, Guadalupe River State Park, Cascade Caverns, and various fairs and festivals that draw thousands of visitors annually.
