History
Bexar County's rich history spans thousands of years, with early inhabitants including the Tonkawa and Apache tribes. In 1691, Spanish explorers arrived and established missions, laying the groundwork for future settlements. San Fernando de Béxar emerged as the center of the Spanish province of Texas. In 1813, Mexican revolutionaries and American allies briefly seized San Antonio, declaring Texas an independent territory, but Spanish forces quickly quashed the insurrection. The 1820s saw an influx of American settlers, leading to increased tensions. During the Texas Revolution, the Battle of the Alamo in 1836 became a pivotal event, with Mexican forces reclaiming the area until Santa Anna's defeat later that year. Following Texas's independence, Bexar County was officially established in 1836.
